The growth of the Future Internet scientific paradigm, and in particular of its main challenging components like the Internet of Things (IoT) constitutes an intelligent core to progress towards unified ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) platform for many applications. The smart museum domain is expected to benefit from the diffusion of intelligent ICT systems because it is a domain characterized by a strong interaction between persons, objects and devices, forming a wide digital ecosystem where all these entities communicate and share information.
Through employment of advanced ICT (Information and Communication Technologies), exhibition objects are equipped with a “digital” identity and connected to each other on a network. They transit from a closed world, in which exhibition objects are characterized by descriptors, to an open world, in which these objects interact with the surrounding environment, because they have become “intelligent”. From the perspective of visitors, the IoT platform allows them to come into contact with a reality of objects capable of arousing interest and excitement because they are offered a direct perception or their knowledge or a combination of perception and knowledge.
